Knowing When To Speak and When To Be Quiet

Updated: Mar 12

"The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked what is perverse." Proverbs 10:32

This struck a chord with me. It is a thorn in my side.

I. Struggle.

My name is Kim Lewis. I do not have control over my tongue.

I have prayed about this for many years and have practiced holding my lips tightly closed when I feel the need to say something, say anything! My problem isn't gossiping. My problem is sarcasm (in good humor, of course) or giving advice when it wasn't asked or even welcomed.

I would think the Lord would just say, "forget about it, there's no hope, Kim".

But He doesn't. He forgives and forgets and gives me chances to recognize when and where to hold back. He shows me times of inhaling and letting go of the words I want to say but shouldn't. He gives me fresh grace and new mercy every single morning. Praise God!

The Holy Spirit moves in me to just...Be Quiet.

And...surprisingly...sometimes...I listen and obey.

"The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut out." (Prov. 10:31)

I don't know about you girls, but I would desire to be looked upon as wise. After all, who wants the reputation of a Chatty Cathy or Negative Nancy or Gossiping Gertrude?

There is something to say about..."just being". Listening more than we speak, hearing what others are truly saying. Making eye contact when someone is talking to you. I mean, really listening instead of being preoccupied with what you want to say.

When we speak we should use words of truth, affirmations and encouragement to ourselves and to others.

I've got work to do! How 'bout you?

I'm going to start by soaking up scripture about what God says about holding my tongue and then walk in His way. Let's strive for righteousness!

I love you and He loves you more!

Lord, bless me as I continue to practice controlling what I say. Thank you for showing me where I fall short and how I can change. Thank You for never giving up on me. My prayer is to allow others to see Jesus...not me. Amen.
