A Wise Investment

(This is an excerpt from Dana's journal a few years ago I wanted to share with you.)

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." 1 Peter 1:3-5

It seems common for people today to set aside a 'nest egg'. Some do it for themselves as a retirement fund, some for their loved ones left behind when they pass and even others who can afford it, both.

There are many methods to do this including a 401k plan, pension, IRA, life insurance policy and the list goes on and on. And though all of these have their own unique characteristics and methods, there is a common thread that runs through each of them.

When one decides they will invest in one or more of these plans, one portion of all their plans includes that blank you must fill in stating who your beneficiary will be. You know, the one or ones you were thinking of when you chose to put back a little for later. It is a noble thing to protect the future of those we love. All of us like the thought of not having to worry about money when we retire, or that our loved ones will not be financially devastated at our untimely passing.

But in our planning and investing there is another thought to consider; what am I leaving behind besides money that will help sustain my family and loved ones? Have I really invested myself, my love and my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ to the measure that those I love will benefit from our time together long after I am gone?

So just as we know who our beneficiary will be when filling out the forms we also should know who will be the beneficiaries of our obedience.

How will the path I chose affect others when I'm gone?

"Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established." (Prov. 4:26)

It is a humbling thought to realize the great influence one's life has on those he loves. The road we travel is only lonely when we always look at the road. When we look around we see those we love, and realize we have led them on this path. They are here because we are here.

Lord, May the road we choose always lead others to You. Whatever we leave behind may it boast of Your love and grace and show those we love the importance of living an obedient life. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus' name. Amen.
