The Ice Cream Truck

"Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom." James 3:13

On any given Saturday afternoon you would find all the neighbor kids gathered at the corner waiting excitedly for the ice cream truck. Sonya and I could hear it coming a mile away.

Back in the 1970's to have a colorful, musical treat box on wheels come rolling through your neighborhood lent us to living our best life (can I get an amen?). As soon as we heard the first notes of the familiar melodies in the distance we grabbed our money and took off running.

On this particular day there was a group of kids that gathered, eager to get in line. There was always an older kid in attendance that felt the need to be large and in charge. They always felt the need to let everyone know they were worth their wisdom in what they had to say, and this day did not disappoint.

A little boy carrying in one hand a dollar bill and in the other a silver dollar, approached the gang of adolescents. One of the 'wise ones' I spoke of earlier brought to his attention that he had too much money; he didn't need both of them. So what did this little boy do but look from one hand to the other, quickly shrugging as he threw the dollar bill down into the space under the concrete drainage cover.

Now the one who mentioned the amount of money he had then jump into action as she slithered herself under this cover through a narrow space. As she was making her way she announced if she got it; it would be hers. When she climbed out of the dark abyss she was sure to show everyone around her the evidence of the dollar she held in her hands and stuffed it deep into her pocket, so proud of what she had rescued.

This little boy didn't realize the worth of the money he held, but the 'wise one' went to great lengths to recover it because she knew that even though he didn't need it that day for his treat; she would be able to return the next Saturday to meet the ice cream truck.

James pointed out that earthly wisdom differs from heavenly wisdom in a number of ways. God being the source of heavenly wisdom making the difference. By studying the Source of wisdom we will be better able to discern the value of something and understand it's worth.

"He also taught me, and said to me: "Let your heart retain my words; keep my commands, and live. Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding."" (Prov. 3:4-7)

Got wisdom?

I love you & He loves you more!

Lord, May I seek wisdom in You and understand the security I have there. Help me to be wise in my thoughts and actions each day and may I study the Source of my wisdom so that I will recognize earthly wisdom that confuses and distorts truth and selfish intent. In Jesus' name. Amen.
