Our Daily Investment

"But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day." 2 Peter 3:8

I read this once in a devotional not pertaining to marriage but I thought we could still apply it to ours.

Imagine there is a bank which credits your account each morning with $86,400, carries over no balance from day to day, allows you to keep no cash balance, and every evening cancels whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every cent, right?

Well, everyone has such an account. Its name is "Time." Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the record of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow."

Time is something we too often take for granted in our marriages. We tell ourselves we'll have more time, "when we reach the top of that corporate ladder", "when the kids are older", "when the kids are grown and out of the house", "when we retire", our list can go on and on. So as you read this passage on God's timing, consider how you spend your time together. He wants every day to count.

I am just as guilty as the next wife when it comes to letting other demands take up too much of my time when who is number one of our tomorrows is sitting right next to us or in the next room. We get so caught up in what needs our attention the most that we overlook the one who is our future; who is our partner for life; our best friend.

"So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." (Ps. 90;12)

I am reminded of the sands in an hourglass; when the timepiece is tipped upside down how the sand rapidly moves through the passageway. That is how the seconds of our days are moving. We must take hold of our time and use it wisely. Let go of the things we do that do not matter and grab hold of the people who do. My hope for you and I is that our husbands will be the first one we reach for. Our relationship with our spouse should come first before any other.

"I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." (John 9:4,5)

Time is short; don't waste today; no one is promised tomorrow. We must invest in the biggest account of our lives now so that one day we don't wake up and see a stranger next to us or, heaven forbid, no one at all.

I love you & He loves you more!

Lord, May we not waste the time we have, but use it to embrace our marriage and make it the best relationship we have. Place a love and devotion in our hearts for our spouses that will stand the sands of time. Bless our marriage and may it be a light to shine for Your glory. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
