God's Hovering Presence

"The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters." Genesis 1:2

When I held my newborn babies in my arms I couldn't help but hold them close (I was very fortunate to give birth to two baby boys, fifteen months apart). I would breath in their baby scent and admire their velvety skin; the long eyelashes and the curves of their noses and mouths. The very essence of my babies was enough to take my breath away. I felt an immediate bond that could never be broken. I knew at once no matter what they did they would always be my children; I would love them with an unconditional love.

I believe this was God's thoughts of us as He was creating the world. He thought of every detail of what we would need to survive and thrive here on earth. He was imagining us as "His Spirit hovered over the face of the waters", breathing in with, His very creative imagination, the heart and soul of His people. He desired to be in close communion even before we were created.

With each passing day He was constructing and building a world for His children. One that we could walk in the cool of the day with Him (Gen. 3:8); eat of all the trees in the garden... except for one (Gen. 3:16). He placed all things under us for our good (Gen. 3:26). And He longed to be with us (Col. 1:16b).

"For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him." (Col. 1:16)

What a generous God we serve! I keep this mental picture in my mind as I daily walk with Him. His Spirit is hovering over me, filling me with His grace and mercy. He carries me in my moments of weakness and when I call on Him for strength. He encourages me to keep the faith and carry on; He isn't finished with me yet. I gladly hold His hand and stroll along these paths of my life hoping to see glimpses of Him in all that I do. I thank Him for being real to me and showing me ways to serve Him. I am His child and I welcome His presence every single day as a breath of life to my soul.

Girls, walk with Him. His Spirit is always with you and His grace hovers over you, waiting for you to acknowledge and reach for Him. May you walk by His side with great expectations of His blessing and favor.

Lord, Your love is amazing! It goes without saying, but You say it anyway in a million different ways. Thank You for Your creation, for we are blessed to be part of it. May we long to walk with You 'in the cool of the day'. In Jesus' name. Amen.
